Kobe Customs

A landmark customs building overlooking Kobe Port. Visitors can tour only the Old Building entrance hall, the Public Relations Exhibition Room, and the courtyard; the second floor is not open to the public. The exhibition introduces the history of customs operations and anti-smuggling efforts.

Kobe Customs

Why Visit

The history of Kobe Customs dates back to 1868, when the Hyogo Tariff Office was established. It was renamed “Kobe Customs” in the Meiji era. The current building blends the historic old structure (with its clock tower) and a modern annex designed like a ship, completed in 1999.

🕰️

Clock Tower & Old Building

The old building, completed in 1927 (Showa 2), features a clock tower and has long been a landmark of Kobe Port.

🏛️

Public Relations Exhibition Room

In the first floor of the old building and the courtyard, exhibits cover customs history, smuggling methods, and the customs tax system.

🏰

Modern Annex (Ship Motif)

The modern annex, built in 1999 integrated with the old building, features a design inspired by ships.
